Our mothers were sisters, so Mike was my first cousin. He was three or four years older than me, so when this happened, I was eight and he was eleven or twelve.
He was like the big brother I’d never had and I adored him. Apparently when I was really little, I used to follow him around whenever we visited. It must have been really annoying!
But anyway, as I was saying, I was eight and he was eleven or twelve. His mom was visiting mine and all of us kids were off playing.
Mike and I had our own secret spot at the back of the garage, where we could get away from both the adults and my little brother, who at five could be a real pain in the ass.
Mostly, we just talked and got on really well. We were OK with comfortable silence as well.
It was in the middle of one of these silences that Mike suddenly said “I’ll show you mine if you’ll show me yours.”
“What do you mean?” I said.
“It’s not fair. You’ve got a brother, so you’ve seen a boy’s thingy, but I don’t have a sister, so I’ve never seen what a girl’s thingy looks like.
“You’re the closest thing that I’ve got to a sister, so I want to see yours. Will you show me, Eve?”
I didn’t really have to think twice about it. Though I didn’t think it was a big deal, I was interested in seeing his and had no problem with showing him mine.
“OK,” I said and started taking off my shorts.
I think Mike was surprised that it had been so easy, but he got his shorts off before I’d even got mine undone.
