So here I am in my early thirties, with three children of my own. Two were at school and my youngest, my 4 year old daughter Emma and the light of my life, was at day care.
As a teacher, I’d occasionally welcomed one of the local police sergeants into my classroom to talk to the kids about various subjects, from policing as a career choice to the avoidance of danger on the streets. Today was one of those days.
When he finished his talk, he asked if he could have a word.
I know he’s actually breaking the law by telling me this, but there’s a pedophile on parole living just down the street.
The sergeant tells me this man’s crime.
He abducted two small girls, one aged 4 and her little sister aged 2. He was 24 and living with his mother, who was a drugged up drunk, shagging a new guy every few weeks. He came and went as he pleased and they had little to do with each other.
He took the girls to his mother’s garage, stripped them and tied them to the end of an old bed. He had a large knife and told the girls he would kill them if they cried out for help or tried to get away.
He was the other kind of pedophile. Not ‘lovers of children’. Not even ‘haters of children’. They just have no empathy. Their only concern is their own sexual gratification and children are their natural victims because they can’t fight back. They get off on the power as well as the sex.
They were there for three days. A neighbor heard them crying while their abductor was passed out drunk.
