“What you’re doing is against God’s law,” intoned Pruneface, reaching for her Bible. She started thumbing through it. “It’s Leviticus 18:22,” supplied Helen helpfully, and Pruneface threw her a startled glance. It was an early warning but she chose to ignore it. “Actually,” said Helen, “it only refers to men having sexual relations with other men, which, of course to any rational intelligent person simply means that these laws were laid down by tribal chiefs who kept their women so totally subjugated that the possibility of them having any sort of relationship, sexual or otherwise, outside those laid down by her paternalistic society and enforced initially by her domineering father and subsequently by her dominating husband, was so remote that it never occurred to anyone that there was the slightest necessity of framing a law specifically to deny it.
But as I have no doubt that you regard the Bible as the unchanging inspired word of God, rather than as an outdated collection of tribal laws laid down by people who thought the world was flat and the stars were holes in the sky, we’ll assume for the sake of argument that when God wrote it, She mentally included the clause where appropriate the male gender shall imply the female and vice versa.”
Pruneface had tried to interrupt several times during this discourse, but Helen just raised her voice slightly and rode right over the top of her. “You are mocking the word of God,” she spat out when Helen had finished.
“Not at all.” Helen looked astonished. “I was merely saying that I have read your Bible, that I do understand that you believe it to be the absolute and unchanging word of God, that we should all believe it literally and act accordingly. “Furthermore,” Helen held up her hand as Pruneface opened her mouth, “Eve and I are willing to give up our unclean sexual relationship if you will allow us to join you in God’s work.”
